What To Text Her Back: How To Answer Without Overthinking

Her message is sitting there. You've read it eleven times. It could mean two completely different things and the reply you send commits you to one of them.

There is a way to do this that isn't guessing, and it starts by answering a different question than the one you're stuck on.

The three questions, in order

One: what is she actually asking for? Most messages are one of three things. A question, an invitation, or a piece of information offered to see what you do with it. Misreading which one you've been handed is where nearly every bad reply comes from. An offered piece of information does not need to be solved, and an invitation does not need to be discussed.

Two: what do you actually want here? Not the strategically optimal want, the real one. If you want to see her Friday, the reply contains Friday. If you're not sure you want to keep going, the reply is short and honest, not warm to keep the option alive.

Three: what would you send if you weren't worried about how it landed? Usually that draft is close to correct and about forty percent shorter than what you were about to send.

The four habits that ruin a good reply

Matching her length. If she sends four words and you send four paragraphs, the imbalance says more than the paragraphs do. If she sends four paragraphs and you send four words to seem unbothered, that says something too.

Answering the words instead of the message. She says work is insane this week. The words are about work. The message might be a soft no, or a real complaint, or a bid for sympathy. Answer the one you actually think it is, and if you genuinely can't tell, answer warmly and add a plan so the ambiguity resolves itself.

Sending questions you don't want answers to. Are we good, is everything okay, did I do something. These are requests for reassurance wearing a question mark, and everyone can hear the difference.

Draft five. The first honest draft, lightly cleaned, beats the fifth defensive one every time. The fifth draft has had all the personality sanded off it in the name of being unobjectionable.

The reply that works most of the time

Acknowledge the actual thing she said, in one line that proves you read it. Then, if you want to see her, propose something specific: a day, a place, a time. That's the whole shape. It works because it does the two things a message can do, shows attention and moves things forward, and skips the thing a message cannot do, which is manufacture interest that isn't there.
