Texting Your Ex: The Questions To Answer Before You Do

It's late, the playlist betrayed you, and the draft is sitting there: short, casual, radioactive. Before anything gets sent, three questions, answered honestly, will tell you whether this is a message or a relapse.

The three questions

One: what changed? Not in your loneliness, in the thing that ended it. If the answer is nothing, you're proposing a rerun of a show you both already watched to the end.

Two: what's the honest goal of the message? Reopen a door is an answer. See if she still cares is not a goal, it's a fix: relief for tonight, purchased with next week's setback.

Three: if her reply is cold, or never comes, can you absorb that this week? If the honest answer is no, the draft isn't a message, it's a bet you can't cover.

If you still should

Then send something with a spine: honest about why you're reaching out, specific, zero manufactured casualness. Been thinking about you, I'd like to talk, coffee this week, beats every carefully-engineered hey stranger ever drafted, because it doesn't pretend the history isn't there.

And if the three questions came back wrong, the move is the harder one. The draft stays a draft, and tonight's discomfort stays tonight-sized instead of becoming next month's.

The no-contact question, answered honestly

No-contact works as healing and fails as strategy. As a boundary that lets you rebuild a life that doesn't route through her, it's the single most reliable tool there is. As a lever to make her feel the silence, it's a countdown you're running in your head that she may not even hear ticking.

The test of which one you're doing: if you're counting the days, it's strategy. If you've stopped counting, it's healing, and it's also, ironically, the only version that ever changed anyone's mind.
